Remember: Blue to the Sky, Orange to the Thigh

   What does an EpiPen do?

An epipen is used in emergencies to treat very serious allergic reactions to insect stings/bites, foods, drugs, or other substances. Epinephrine works quickly to improve breathing, stimulate the heart, raise a dropping blood pressure, reverse hives, and reduce swelling of the face, lips, and throat.

Do you need a prescription for an EpiPen? How do I get one?

How Do You Get an EpiPen? You can’t just go to a pharmacy and ask for an EpiPen. In order to fill an EpiPen prescription at a pharmacy you do need to have a prescription from a doctor.  You should fill that prescription long before you have an allergic reaction serious enough to use the EpiPen.

Do you need to go to a hospital after using an EpiPen?

You should always see your doctor after having to use your EpiPen. That is not because of the epinephrine, but because the allergic reaction probably requires further monitoring. Many patients also need more than one dose of epinephrine or further emergency treatment.

Do EpiPens need to be kept cold?

EpiPens should not be stored in refrigerators or in a vehicle’s glove box! They should not be exposed to extreme heat or cold and should be protected from light.

How long does it take for an EpiPen to start working?

Once the EpiPen has been administered it begins to work immediately for a severe allergic reaction, which is known as anaphylaxis.

Does my EpiPen expire?

YES! EpiPens expire approximately every 12 to 18 months. You should never use an expired EpiPen or any auto-injected pen that has cloudy or discoloured solution.

How Many is Too Many?

Did you know that during most cases of an allergic reaction, people require a second dose of epinephrine? Increasingly so for individuals with an allergy to shellfish, peanuts and tree nuts. It is recommended that all who are at risk of food-related anaphylaxis should carry 2 doses of epinephrine.

What do I do if I accidentally inject myself in my hand or foot?

If you accidentally inject yourself with your EpiPen into these areas, go to the nearest emergency room immediately for treatment.

How should I dispose of a used EpiPen?

After using your EpiPen seek medical attention, and give any used EpiPen Auto-Injectors to emergency responders or emergency room personnel for them to discard.

For expired EpiPens, contact your local pharmacy to assist in disposing the device safely as according to regulations.
