Covid-19: Delta Variant vs. Vaccines

Home » Articles » [page_title]

The emergence of variants occurring throughout the Covid-19 pandemic has made many people question whether vaccines are effective. While studies suggest that vaccines like Moderna or Pfizer are effective against these variants, the degree to which they are varies.

What is Happening?

New information and findings have come out of Israel over the past few weeks. As Delta variant prevalence has increased, protection against it has decreased from 94% to 64% in those vaccinated. On top of that, the Delta variant is 50% more transmissible than the Alpha variant. What is even more interesting is that since Israel lifted social restrictions at the beginning of June, 55% of the newly infected were vaccinated. These findings support what the WHO has made very clear: just because you are vaccinated does not mean you cannot contract or spread the virus. So, everyone who thinks that they can return to business as usual as soon as they get vaccinated – we are not out of the woods yet.

What May Happen?

As mask mandates and workplace restrictions are currently being lifted for partially- and fully-vaccinated people, like in the United States, South Korea, or Spain, it may not last for long. With the Delta variant decreasing vaccination protection and increasing transmission, certain protocols like mask mandates and group size limitations may be reinstated.
